Tenure track career system

Aalto University’s tenure track career system provides researchers with a well-supported and clear career path towards a permanent professorship. Nearly 300 new professors have been recruited to our tenure track since 2010, with one third coming from outside Finland.

The objective of tenure track is to support the academic freedom of professors and to reach a world class level in research, education, academic leadership and societal impact.

Why should you apply for tenure track at Aalto University?

  • Take advantage of the university’s extensive corporate collaboration – our corporate collaboration is among the most activet in the world (14th in the world, CWTS Leiden Ranking).

  • Develop your leadership skills and pedagogical expertise – our professors receive top-level training in the fields of academic leadership and pedagogy.

Tenure track consists of three levels: Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Full Professor. Candidates can be recruited for any of these levels in accordance with each job announcement. Our recruiting is based on open international competition, and we primarily focus on scientific and/or artistic potential and merits when making selections.

Tenure track promotion proceeds according to intermediate reviews based on your merits. This means that you are only competing with yourself, not with your colleagues. Performance is evaluated through three dimensions: research and/or artistic and professional work, teaching and service. The evaluation criteria are based on the principles of predictability, transparency, and comparability with international standards. More details about the criteria are available in the Evaluation criteria.

Professor’s work profile

A professor’s work consists of research or artistic and professional work, teaching, activity in the scientific or artistic community as well as participation in societal interaction and international collaboration in the field. Each tenure track professor has an annual discussion with his/her immediate supervisor concerning the work profile. The university’s general guidelines concerning the time allocation and work profile of a tenure track professor are described below.
